Maintain Your Natural Color Diamonds Shining Like New

Every Langerman creation is crafted by a team of master goldsmiths and diamond experts in Antwerp, Belgium. We select natural color diamonds and 18Kt gold to create extraordinary jewels meant to last for generations. Durability begins with expert craftsmanship, but the owner prolongs it. We recommend you store your collection properly, clean it periodically and take good care of it to preserve its sparkle.

Let’s Start With the Don’ts. Learn What You Should be Avoiding to Protect Your Jewelry.

1. When getting ready, put on your jewelry last.

You have probably heard this before as it is common knowledge. Putting on your jewels last reduces the chances of them coming into contact with perfume, body lotions, moisturizers, and all kinds of oils or alcohols your beauty products might contain. Even the slightest trace of grease can attract dust and pollution to your pieces. Dirt can then build up and eventually make gold look dull and natural color diamonds cloudy. Furthermore, ingredients in your perfume might accelerate the natural tarnishing process of your gold pieces.

2. Avoid contact with harsh chemicals.

This tip might sound a little too obvious, but we are more often in contact with harsh substances than we think. For example, constant exposure to high chlorine concentrations —like that found on pools— can potentially damage your gold jewelry. We also suggest you take all your jewelry off before manipulating any household cleaning solutions. Be especially aware of ammonia which causes discoloration in gold.

3. Don’t wear your jewelry while doing sports or at the beach.

This is to prevent you from dropping or losing your jewelry. The beach is a tricky place to wear your jewelry at. Sunscreen and sand are not a good combination as you will probably get your rings and necklaces dirty, and there’s also the risk of losing them in the waves. Depending on how hard the shock, your jewelry could dent, bent or worse, break. A hard blow can also compromise the prongs, and your diamonds might not be secured in their settings anymore. So if you recently dropped a diamond ring or a pair of earrings, and even if there are no apparent signs of damage, it’s best to take it to a jeweler and request a prong inspection.

How to Properly Store Your Natural Color Diamonds

4. Protect your jewelry from scratches.

Diamonds are the hardest natural material in the world, but that doesn’t mean they are indestructible. A diamond can surely scratch another diamond or leave a mark on a gold ring. It’s essential to keep your jewels separate from each other to avoid any unwanted marks.

5. Store your gold and natural color diamonds the right way.

Storing your pieces in the right way will protect them from dust and prevent tarnishing. Keeping your jewels in their original box or pouch is highly advised. However, if you prefer to store your jewelry in trays or cases, make sure they are lined with a soft fabric. Look for a snug fit for your rings, the right size compartments for your earrings, and a way to secure the chains of your necklaces and bracelets, so they don’t get tangled. Also, remember to always close the clasps of your chains.

How to Clean Your Diamond Jewels Like a Pro

6. Clean your jewels after wearing them.

Our skin is constantly producing oils and sweat. This means that if you wear your pieces often, it is a good idea to clean them at least once a month. A microfiber or flannel cloth will do, but all the better if you have a polishing cloth on hand. Polishing cloths are typically impregnated with a polishing agent, and they are perfect for removing tarnish. Bear in mind, though, that although they will leave a lustrous finish on your gold, polishing clothes might scratch gemstones that are softer than diamonds. Use them to clean just the metal part of your non-diamond jewels.

7. Stay away from chemical cleaners and dipping solutions.

It is better to avoid commercial cleaning solutions. Even when they might seem like a quick way to clean your jewelry, some formulas can be too strong and abrasive. You could potentially damage your pieces if left for too long in these solutions, and they’re often recommended for jewelry that doesn’t have any gemstones. Besides, most of these cleaners will cause some level of skin irritation, and some might even release strong fumes.

8. Be careful when using an ultrasonic cleaner.

Ultrasonic cleaners are an attractive option to use at home as they don’t require you to clean your jewelry pieces one by one. But remember that ultrasonic machines are only safe for hard gemstones like diamonds, rubies, and sapphires. The high-frequency sound waves of an ultrasonic cleaner are strong enough to cause irreparable damage to softer gems.

9. Clean your jewelry with soapy water.

Ultimately, a mix of dish soap and lukewarm water is the safest, easiest way to clean your Langerman jewels at home. You can clean your pieces with this method once a month or right after your pieces have come in contact with oily products. It is not necessary to let your jewelry sit in the solution, just rubbing it with your fingers while submerged will be enough to loosen up most dust and oils. For deep cleaning, you can use a brush with very soft bristles. Rinse with clean water and pat completely dry with a soft towel. It’s important not to bring any moisture into your jewelry box.

10. Have your jewelry professionally cleaned and checked once a year.

Taking your pieces to a jeweler for a professional cleaning every year will make them shine like new. An experienced jeweler will most likely inspect your items and report back to you if there’s any damage in need of repair. Nevertheless, it doesn’t hurt to remind your jeweler to check the prongs and clasps of your pieces as a preventive measure. Also, bear in mind that 18Kt gold is a relatively soft material, and it will naturally show signs of wear over time. If your pieces have deep marks and scratches, ask your jeweler for a re-polish.
